Deborah Wecselman Design | decor

Written on November 28, 2011 at 5:02 am, by

Deborah Wecselman Design, Home Decor Blogs Interview decorDeborah Wecselman is not only an accomplished and well-known Miami-based designer, she was an integral part of the Ralph Lauren design culture.  During her time at Polo Ralph Lauren, Deborah served as Director of International store design where she was responsible for more than 5000 stores.

Deborah is known for creating spaces with approachable elegance (which I adore), a concept we agree is the definition of good interior design today.  As you can see from these beautiful photographs, her work is never forced or “over decorated” but rather simple and classic modern sanctuaries.

I was given the opportunity to ask her some questions a few weeks ago and found her answers to be as interesting as her work.  I hope you enjoy.

Q: You were senior Director of International store design for Polo Ralph Lauren. Tell us about the design process for such a high profile and iconic company?
A: Working for such a great company there was always an organized process, we would initially meet with the owners, architects to see the reality of the space. We would then in-house design which concept would best fit for the location, space allotment and merchandise needs. Then we would begin the process and as in all design there were constant changes and readjustments through the process.

Q: What is your advice for interior designers just launching a career?
A: Be sure you have enough experience working in the design field, not just in terms of design but also in terms of the business aspect of the job. And then go for it and be flexible.

Q: You do a really nice job combining textiles but still manage to make spaces look clean and simple. What’s your secret?
A: Mixing things and trusting my instinct.

Q: Share with us 3 secrets for personalizing a room and creating the chic finished look you did so well during your career at Polo Ralph Lauren?
A: Artwork on the walls, Accessories and flowers

Okay, back to planning the Turkey Party.

Prosciutto, Brussels sprouts holiday dinner domestic god(ish)

Brussels sprouts can be gross, I totally agree.  Prosciutto? again, I’m not a big fan.  Throw them together with the ingredients below and it’s a match made in heaven.  The perfect side dish for just about any cold weather dinner.

recipe Brussels Sprouts cecy j Prosciutto

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons butter
1 shallot finely chopped
3 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto, cut into slivers
20-30 brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
salt to taste.
lots of pepper.

Prep:
1. preheat oven to 375 degrees
2. melt butter in large skillet over medium-high heat
3. add shallots and prosciutto and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently
4. add brussels sprouts and continue to cook for 5 minutes
5. reduce heat to a simmer, cover and let simmer until sprouts are tender, about 10 minutes (you don’t want them soft)
6. add lots of pepper
7. season with salt to taste
8. stir in 1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano cheese and cook just until cheese is melted
9. remove from heat
10. transfer mixture to a cookie sheet
11. bake until bubbly and top is slightly browned, about 20 minutes
12. serve immediately after you take them out of the oven

Belzberg Architects, Hollywood Hills, Modern, Crazy, Stupid, Love.

I’ve never really fancied myself as a modern or minimalist girl.  I like cozy and warm.  I want people to walk into my house, take off their shoes and make themselves comfortable while I grab them a glass of wine.  However, the mayhem of motherhood over the last 4 years and the number of toys that constantly need to be picked up off my floors make me crave that clean, sleek, “nobody actually lives here” look sometimes.  I’m completely drawn to modern these days and actually find the architectural style ironically… cozy.

An anonymous reader gave me the tip that Belzberg Architects created the home from the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love after seeing my post on the pad that I thought resembled it.  Belzberg Architects clearly has insane attention to detail.  They design with style and build modern, minimalist living at its absolute best.  I can’t get over the outdoor movie room.  It’s so perfect for the Hollywood Hills bachelor pad.

Enjoy…  And thanks for the tip, anonymous reader.

Chicago Spaces: Inspiring Interiors | decor

Chicago Spaces, Inspiring Interiors, Jan Parr Chicago Home + Garden magazine, Home décor

I love Chicago.  The people are friendly, the food is world class, the architecture is influential and the design world is humble but completely cutting edge.

I was honored to be given a sneak peek of Chicago Spaces: Inspiring Interiors, by Jan Parr and the Editors of Chicago Home + Garden magazine, a beautiful coffee table book that does more than just look pretty.  Jan Parr and her team provide insider tips into the Chicago interior design world in a well-organized and thoughtful book which includes a brilliant index of where to shop for the home in the windy city and detailed accounts of how the homeowners, architects and interior designers brought the homes to life.

I pulled some of my favorite photographs from the book for you to enjoy and I’ve already placed my order… Chicago Spaces: Inspiring Interiors is the perfect holiday gift for my design loving friends.

Chicago Spaces, Inspiring Interiors, Jan Parr Chicago Home + Garden magazine, Home décor Jan Parr was also kind enough to provide CECY j readers with a few insider recommendations for your next visit to Chicago (below).
