Deborah Wecselman is not only an accomplished and well-known Miami-based designer, she was an integral part of the Ralph Lauren design culture. During her time at Polo Ralph Lauren, Deborah served as Director of International store design where she was responsible for more than 5000 stores.
Deborah is known for creating spaces with approachable elegance (which I adore), a concept we agree is the definition of good interior design today. As you can see from these beautiful photographs, her work is never forced or “over decorated” but rather simple and classic modern sanctuaries.
I was given the opportunity to ask her some questions a few weeks ago and found her answers to be as interesting as her work. I hope you enjoy.Q: You were senior Director of International store design for Polo Ralph Lauren. Tell us about the design process for such a high profile and iconic company? A: Working for such a great company there was always an organized process, we would initially meet with the owners, architects to see the reality of the space. We would then in-house design which concept would best fit for the location, space allotment and merchandise needs. Then we would begin the process and as in all design there were constant changes and readjustments through the process. Q: What is your advice for interior designers just launching a career? A: Be sure you have enough experience working in the design field, not just in terms of design but also in terms of the business aspect of the job. And then go for it and be flexible. Q: You do a really nice job combining textiles but still manage to make spaces look clean and simple. What’s your secret? A: Mixing things and trusting my instinct. Q: Share with us 3 secrets for personalizing a room and creating the chic finished look you did so well during your career at Polo Ralph Lauren? A: Artwork on the walls, Accessories and flowers
